2022 is a blank page, a story yet to be written. What are you going to make of it? Why not make this the year to make the final decision to change your life for the better – to get and stay sober.
Making the decision to put your health and wellbeing first is not like regular resolutions that we normally forget about a few weeks into the year. To help you stay on track and follow through with this life-changing decision, we have some simple tips for you to follow:
Take it one day at a time
Everyday is going to be a new experience – some days are going to be easier on your road to recovery than others, and that is expected. By committing to staying sober each and every day, you are taking the unnecessary pressure off yourself to stay sober longer than you are able to that specific day. After all, sobriety is a choice we all have to make EVERY SINGLE DAY.
Self-care is imperative
You have to believe in yourself and know that you deserve love and taking the time out to take care of yourself is the best way to do this. Set some time aside every day to do something small for yourself. This could include meditation, reading a new book, physical exercise or even taking a nap when your body is telling you it needs to rest.
Mistakes happen – don’t give up if you slip up
We have to be honest – getting sober is not easy. It is going to take a lot of self control and dedication to keep going every day. BUT, there may come a time when you do slip, and that’s OK. You have to give yourself the grace to understand that mistakes and slips happen, but that doesn’t mean you have to give up on yourself. Take this as a learning opportunity – ask yourself what led up to the slip, how were you feeling, what were you doing, who were you with? By understanding and learning from your mistakes, you are less likely to repeat them.
Know when you need extra help and ask for it
The majority of people cannot get and stay sober by themselves – they need help. Having a support system in place is extremely important to achieving your goals. Knowing you can rely on someone when you are struggling or just to talk to can take your worst day and change it into one of your best.
